Lowell Highlands Neighborhood in Lowell, Massachusetts

The growth of the Lowell Highlands neighborhood in Lowell, MA can be largely attributed to wealthy citizens who purchased large parcels of land in the Lower Highlands area in the 1850s. The area had been previously much unused, and the buyers wanted to build large homes in the area. Prior to this gentrification, the Lower Highlands was a cluster of homes near smaller factories located away from Downtown Lowell.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, European immigrants moving to Lowell for jobs began to populate the Highlands area. After modernization caused many of the mills to become obsolete, a considerable amount of area jobs were lost, and the downturn continued through the Great Depression. In the 1950's, Wang Laboratories, a major Lowell employer, was established and based in the Lowell Highlands. This created much more work in the area, and for a short while, immigrant workers once again made Lowell their destination.

Eventually, Wang's Lowell operations closed, leaving many people without work until the city began its own rejuvenation efforts in the 1990s. These efforts to make Lowell a better place for its citizens worked as many office buildings and large companies established themselves in the Highlands, creating more jobs in Lowell.
